Vata Pacifiying Spiced Date Balls

Vata Pacifiying Spiced Date Balls

This recipe combines dates, almonds which are considered to be sattvic, or ‘pure’ in Ayurveda, with warming spices to enkindle your digestive fire, or agni.  These spiced date balls are a great energy boost in the morning and will nourish the tissues and help promote peaceful thoughts.

Makes approximately 15 balls.

¼ cup organic blanched almonds (see instructions for blanching almonds below)

15 organic pitted dates

¼ tsp ground ginger

1/4 tsp ground cardamom

1 dash ground cinnamon

1 dash ground black pepper

Using a food processor or blender, mix the almonds and dates together first, then add the spices until it become a dough-like paste.  The spice amount listed here is moderate, so add more spice to taste if you prefer.  If the paste is very sticky, add a few more nuts.  If the paste is too dry, add more pitted dates.  Roll into balls.  Enjoy!

Blanched Almonds

Place organic almonds in a bowl of water for 1-2 hours.  Drain water and gently squeeze almonds out of their skins.

*This recipe calls for blanched almonds because the skins are considered dry and slightly aggravating for vata.  The consistency of blanched almonds is also blends a bit better with the dates in this recipe.
