A Delightful Valentine's Day Recipe: Chocolate Peanut Butter Dates

This quick and easy recipe combines dates, peanut butter, and chocolate for a fiery yet grounding delight.  In Ayurveda dates are considered to be a sattvic food, while peanuts and chocolate are rajasic.  Our food affects the state of our mind.  Sattvic foods like dates bring a peaceful, clear, and tranquil quality to the mind.  Rajasic foods like peanuts and chocolate stimulate fiery emotions such as passion, creativity, and confidence.  Like a perfect love, this recipe aims to strike a balance between peace and passion.  If peanuts irritate your stomach or give you acid reflux, you can replace the peanut butter with almond butter to lessen the fiery effect as almonds, like dates are considered to also be a sattvic food.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Dates

-12 pitted organic dates

-6 squares organic dark chocolate

-Approximately ¼ cup organic crunchy peanut butter

Slice open the dates and fill each with a modest amount of peanut butter-or almond butter if you prefer.

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler (you can use a thick glass jar in a small pot of water)

Roll the filled dates in the glass container with the melted chocolate.

Place the dates on a plate and allow to dry.

Once the chocolate is hardened they are ready to eat.  These are very filling, so as always when eating, try to savour the moment and enjoy the sensory experience.

If you are feeling forlorn or lovesick this Valentine’s Day, remember that love is its own reward. This is one of the greatest things I ever learned during my Ayurvedic Training.  I often remind myself of the wise words of one of my favourite teachers: “You don’t fall in love, you rise.”  If that doesn’t work, there is always chocolate!
