The Kapha Diet

Kapha is the heaviest and most stable dosha.  It is associated with our immunity, strength, and endurance, while giving the body structure and lubrication.  Spring is a cool, wet season where the flowers and trees are blooming and many animals are giving birth or mating.  Spring can be a time of great energy and mental and physical fortitude. However due to of its heaviness Spring can also be a time of lethargy and stagnation, weight gain, and over production of mucous due to seasonal allergies.

This chart contains dietary information about what foods are best for keeping your kapha balanced this Spring.  If you are wondering why certain foods are listed as ‘favor’ or ‘reduce’ consider the qualities of the foods compared with the qualities of kapha. It is cold, stable, sweet, and heavy, so it will be pacified by lighter, drier, warmer foods, and pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes. Ayurveda advises us to reduce heavy, cold, oily and watery foods, and sweet, sour, and salty tastes to prevent excess mucous, body mass, and mental fogginess. This list is meant simply to help you in deciding what foods to eat more of, and what to eat less of. There should be no need to completely cut out any food listed as 'reduce' unless you have a strong aversion to it.
